STUDENT/RESIDENT APPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR CAL-SEARCH LEARNING AND ROTATION OPPORTUNITIES

Cal-SEARCH is now accepting applications for students/residents interested in 4-to-6 week rotations in clinics and community health centers. This new effort provides funded clinical training for 75 primary care students/residents statewide.

Student/residents in the program will: ?• Gain hands-on clinical experience working with a medical professional team ?• Develop community projects linked to preceptors and mentors ?• Receive $665 stipend upon completion

The final reports for Health Capacity Building Grants are as follows:

For those who did not extend the grant your report is due no later than February 28, 2010. This is the form for your report: Final Reporting 2 28 2010 50000

For schools who did extend their grant, your forms are due no later than June 30, 2010. These are the forms you need to submit A) Final Reporting 6 30 2010 50000 and B) Final Reporting 6 30 2010 50000 Remember, if you have any questions contact your Health Capacity Grant Mentor.

$50,000 Available for Emancipated Foster Youth to Attend College or Career Technical Training

The Foster Youth Education Fund (FYEF) raised over $50,000 this year in college and career training funds for foster youth. These funds go to emancipating or emancipated foster youth from the four-county area (Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo). FYEF Scholarship funds are now available for foster youth candidates. Foster youth scholarship recipients can attend any program of their choice including but not limited to graduate studies, four year and two year colleges, or career technical or vocational education programs. This scholarship opportunity is also open to students currently in the four-year Guardian Scholarship Program at CSU Sacramento.

Scholarship applications are due March 8, 2010. For more information about the scholarship or if you wish to donate, go to www.fyef.org to obtain a scholarship package (under FYEF News) and watch a clip of one of the previous shows.

$2,250.00 Paid Health Sciences Job Shadowing Practicum

The Paid Job Shadowing Practicum is a partnership between Sutter Health and the Yolo County Office of Education. In this practicum public school teachers or counselors may be placed with a Sutter Health facility for three days of continuing education. In cooperation with Sutter Health professionals, the participant will shadow professional and/or management healthcare personnel, and thus gain new knowledge and insight into the current world-of-work application of their subject matter field.

A Job Shadowing Practicum in the Health Sciences Career Pathway can provide experiences that are as unique as every person who participates. For the teacher looking for new ways to motivate students, it can provide a fun and unusually hands-on experience that can help to demonstrate the link between schoolwork and the world of work, answering the question, “Why do I have to learn this?” The experience will also provide a unique opportunity to develop lesson plans based on ideas and insights gained from seeing the application of ELA, math and science in the health care professions. Additionally, it can be a rewarding experience that builds mutual trust, respect, and understanding for all involved – teachers and hosting healthcare workers.

Stipend for full participation is $2,250.00.

Eligible applicants for this program include public school teachers (especially, but not limited to math and science teachers), community college instructors, Health, Nursing, CTE/ROP teachers, and counselors.

2009-2010 Grant for Health Science Capacity Building Project Available

The 2010 Health Capacity Building Project “Request For Application” funding is now available. You may access the RFA by downloading the following document: California Health Science Capacity Building Project RFA 10-11 You may also read the grant letter from Superintendent Jack O’Connell Superintendent’s Letter Grant funds may be used to either establish a new Health Science Pathway Program or to enhance an existing Health Science Pathway Program. Successful grantees will be expected to develop a standards-based curriculum, to develop a coherent sequence of courses, and to provide health science content and context inclusive of grades seven through twelve. Grant funds must not be used for maintaining existing programs.
