Mandatory Health Capacity Grant Coordinators Meeting

All schools who have received the Health Capacity Building Grant for 2010 must send at least one representative to a Grant Coordinator’s Meeting on October 7th at the Hyatt Regency Orange County. A “continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

1. Is the October 7^th meeting mandatory? Yes. Preferably the program coordinator. If not, then a team member that has decision-making authority.

2. Do I need to register for the October 7^th mandatory meeting? No. Just show up on time, please. The Coordinator’s meeting will begin at 9:00 AM and will conclude at approximately 2:30 PM.

3. Do I need to submit the name of the person from our program attending the meeting? Yes, please email names to your mentor and copy Carla Cherry at ccherry@khsd.k12.ca.us .

4. Do I need to make a room reservation for the Hyatt? If you are flying or driving in the night before, YES. For those staying at the Hyatt Regency Orange County the night before, remember that September 16^th is the cut-off date to reserve a room. If you need to make a reservation you may call the hotel (714 750 1234) or you may register online at: https://resweb.passkey.com/Resweb.do?mode=welcome_ei_new&eventID=2664997

5. Will I need to buy breakfast or lunch. No. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Dr. Carlisle’s Institute Keynote Address

Many individuals at the June Health Sciences and Public Services Institute asked to have a copy of the presentation by the keynote speaker, Dr. David M. Carlisle, and so we have made it available for download from this post.

Dr. Carlisle’s presentation was on the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act”, the most significant health care reform legislation since Medicare and Medicaid in 1964/65, and how this new legislation will impact health care in the state of California. The following is the presentation:

Dr. Carlisle, a graduate from Brown University medical school with Masters and Doctorate degrees from the UCLA School of Public Health, is also a former Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar, and is an Associate Professor of Medicine at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research.

Scripps Center for Learning & Innovation

Here is an example of opportunities for high school students to participate in “real world” health science related occupations, and have experiences that will help them become the health professionals of the future.

Scripps Center for Learning & Innovation, in partnership with UC High School, launched a semester internship this year in an effort to reach out to high school seniors interested in pursuing health care careers. The internships are a part of a two-semester health essentials elective for 12th graders wanting real-world experience in health care. Click here to learn more about this example. Scripps Health

Here is the agenda for the Institute, with specific information on the Monday and Tuesday “Break-Out” sessions. HSE Institute Agenda Please remember that a requirement of the Summer Institute is that you make your reservations no later than June 4, 2010 and you register for the Institute itself by June 19, 2010. In addition, make sure that you have each member of your team present at the Institute, and that you bring the Health Science Educator Institute CheckList and the information for the Program Profile to the Institute. The Health-Science-Educator-Institute form has the reservation information as well as dates and other supporting material.

Taking Center Stage – Act II (TCSII)

A Portal for Middle Grades Educators

There are some good resources and ideas at the Department of Education site “Taking Center Stage – Act II” that may be of value for those Health Careers programs who are building strong relationships with the grade 7/8, Middle School programs. Among many other things, the site looks at how instructional or professional development time is spent can have a significant impact on the academic, social, and emotional success of young adolescents.

Please take a look and see what you can use to further the Health Careers programs at your schools and your Middle School partners. Again, the link is Act II (TCSII)

Muscular Dystrophy Volunteer Opportunity

The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) has wonderful volunteer opportunities available. They are currently recruiting summer camp counselors for the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s camp program at Camp Westminster Woods in Occidental, CA. This sleep-away camp takes place August 15-21, 2010. This special camp program is a great opportunity for students who are interested in pursuing a career in a medical field, need to acquire volunteer hours or have an interest in community service or working with children with special needs. In addition to the many meaningful learning opportunities, volunteers will participate in a medical training, team-building exercises and have lots of fun!
